About REANNZ

REANNZ is a Crown‑owned membership organisation dedicated to empowering Aotearoa’s research and education sector. Our diverse membership includes New Zealand’s Public Research Organisations (PROs), universities, museums, libraries and government organisations. REANNZ connects New Zealand’s science and research sector by operating and supporting specialist high‑performance digital infrastructure. In July 2025 we joined forces with the New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) – bringing together people, platforms and technologies that support advanced computing, AI and data‑driven research across Aotearoa.

Why This Role Matters

We’re looking for a hands‑on technical leader to make sure New Zealand’s national research computing infrastructure runs smoothly, securely and efficiently.

As the Advanced Computing & Data Platform Lead, you’ll guide a talented team managing HPC, cloud and data platforms that power cutting‑edge science. Your work will directly enable researchers across the country to do what they do best – innovate, discover and solve complex problems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day‑to‑day operations of advanced computing and data platforms
  • Manage and mentor a small, high‑performing engineering team
  • Lead incident, problem and change management processes
  • Design and implement new platform services and enhancements
  • Lead the development and operational support of HPC & Cloud systems / services
  • Monitor system performance and ensure uptime across critical services
  • Partner with research institutions to support complex data workflows
  • Stay abreast of new tech in HPC, cloud and open‑source tools
  • Manage vendor and partner relationships
  • Foster a collaborative, curious and learning‑focused culture

Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in computing, engineering, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years’ experience designing, implementing, and managing distributed computing or data systems
  • Strong Linux and virtualization or cloud computing expertise (e.g., HPC, OpenStack)
  • Experience with automation and CI / CD tools (e.g., Ansible, GitLab)
  • Familiarity with Python or similar scripting languages
  • Understanding of Linux networking, containers, and security best practice
  • Solid troubleshooting and systems performance skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
  • Leadership experience or an aptitude to step in – developing people and fostering collaboration
