About the Role
We’re looking for a creative and hands‑on Communications & Marketing Lead to steer and deliver our communications mahi. This role is responsible for implementing our Marketing & Communications Plan and day‑to‑day communications, working closely with a small, capable team.
This position is scaled for part‑time hours (20 hours per week), with a focus on high‑impact priorities. You’ll translate the brand strategy into action, support key campaigns, and ensure our voice is consistent and values‑led.
This is an Auckland‑based role. While we support flexible working, you’ll need to be in Auckland for regular hui and engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Delivery
Deliver our annual communications plan and maintain the content and campaign calendar
Manage day‑to‑day communications to keep messaging clear and consistent across all channels
Provide communications input into priority projects and campaigns
Contribute communications updates and insights to ZWA’s Strategic & Annual Plans
Team Leadership
Provide guidance and oversight to our Communications Officer and Brand Advisor / Graphic Designer who will report directly to you
Coordinate team workflow, planning, and delivery
Content Oversight and Delivery
Guiding documents include ZWA Strategic Plan, Annual Plans and Communications Strategy
Conceptualise, develop, oversee, review and sign off on key website, social media, project comms and campaign content. Content creation will be a significant part of the role.
Focus on content that delivers the most impact for members and audiences, including :
Development and execution of marketing plan for newsletters, training and membership
Oversee the production of three monthly newsletters
Stakeholder Engagement
Manage communications with members, supporters, media, and partners
Support promotion for events, projects, launches, and public campaigns
Maintain communications audiences and segments
Monitoring and Evaluation
Track core communications metrics and audience engagement
Report on outcomes and adjust strategy as needed
About You
We’re looking for someone who brings a mix of strategic thinking, hands‑on delivery, and a collaborative approach.
You’ll likely bring :
Experience in marketing, communications, and digital media
Experience leading a small team or project
Strong writing and editing skills across formats (newsletters, web, social)
A strong commitment to upholding and honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and He Whakaputanga with a clear understanding of how to reflect that in the work
Comfort with planning, scheduling, and coordinating delivery across platforms
Experience working in a values‑based, nonprofit, or advocacy setting
Ability to create communications suitable for audiences in Aotearoa
Familiarity with tools like Mailchimp, WordPress, Hubspot, Canva, Google Suite and Youtube with awareness of tech updates for comms platforms
It’s a bonus if you also have :
Campaign communications experience (social, environmental, or community causes)
Design sensibility or brand management experience
Insight into what motivates behaviour change and builds movements
Have working familiarity with Te Reo Māori
Photography and video content creation and editing skills
