Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting an Ahonuku - Associate Professor in Cyber Security to join Te Kura Mātai Pūkaha, Pūrorohiko - School of Engineering and Computer Science on a permanent, full-time contract. The position represents a chance to provide leadership, research, and teaching support in the Te Kura Mātai Pūkaha, Pūrorohiko - School of Engineering and Computer Science, particularly within the Cyber Security programme. The appointee will play a major role in working with existing staff in the Cyber Security programme and across the School to continue the development of the programme and its integration with other programmes as well as increase our impact via research and broader engagement with external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities:

  • Role modelling through productive research and a well-established research agenda.
  • Commitment to the University’s strategic goals and actively supporting the achievement of those goals through academic leadership (e.g., leading research groups, successful strategies for boosting numbers of postgraduate students, successful strategies for maintaining or increasing student participation and learning, etc.).
  • Commitment to ensuring high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision.
  • Publishing in disciplinary-relevant internationally refereed journals (i.e., where the refereeing process is of international standing) and/or with academically reputable national and/or international presses.
  • Academically rigorous teaching that stimulates students’ learning in the discipline in general and in your specialist area.
  • Exercising leadership in curriculum development and learning, teaching and assessment practices that engage students in their learning and are focused on student achievement.
  • Actively engaging with industry, government, professions, and diverse communities, and, where appropriate, contributing effectively to a role in your professional body or disciplinary community.
  • Understanding and commitment to the University’s core ethical values of respect, responsibility, fairness, integrity, and empathy.

You will:

  • Be a motivated, student-focused individual who listens to and understands the needs of students and meets those needs through a professional, courteous, and empathetic approach.

Key requirements:

  • Completed PhD in a relevant field, or other relevant qualifications commensurate with the seniority of the role.
  • Highly developed record of scholarly research including publication in leading refereed national and international journals and/or with leading academically reputable presses (or where appropriate, extensive relevant industry/professional experience).
  • Sustained and high-quality record of relevant creative publication and/or performance at national and international levels.
  • Well-established research agenda.
  • Demonstrated evidence of academic leadership (or ability for leadership in their discipline) in teaching and research (e.g., mentoring of colleagues, leading research groups, developing and leading innovative initiatives that encourage or enhance student learning, etc.).
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful disciplinary tertiary teaching.
  • Proven evidence of attracting and successfully supervising students at master’s and PhD level.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with, mentor and lead colleagues from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the diversity of the student population by the use of different approaches to teaching methods and practice.
  • Evidence of an effective contribution to the administration or interests of an organisation, to the wider community and, where appropriate, to the profession.
  • Evidence of successfully attracting competitive national and/or international level funding for research (including conference) activities in addition to internal level funding.
