Unit Clerk - Acute Care

This Unit Clerk (UC) position is in the Acute care department. Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for facilitating care pathways for patients and their families, performing clerical and receptionist duties. Tasks may include patient registration, booking and arranging for diagnostic tests, contacting consultation services, arranging transport as well as other varied duties as the need arises. May be responsible for short notice replacement calls, utilizing criteria, as determined by management. Responsible for monitoring and ordering of supplies and stationery. The Unit Clerk is instrumental in facilitating communication between nursing and other health care disciplines, departments and sites, community partners, patients, and families, and in maintaining confidentiality of patient information. This position is a major asset to the smooth and efficient operation of the Acute care department. Must have demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize effectively. Must have well-developed organizational skills, be able to multi-task and be able to work in an ever-changing environment, dealing with frequent interruptions. Ability to respond to new needs of the role, showing initiative and self-directness. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Proven team player. Physically able to do the job.

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and / or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Required Qualifications

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

Additional Required Qualifications

Medical terminology. One (1) year current experience in a Unit clerk or related position. Previous hospital experience required. Computer skills that allow navigation in Windows, NetCare, Connect Care etc.

Preferred Qualifications

Rural hospital experience. ER experience. Acute care experience. Connect Care experience.
