Rārangi Utu ā-Mātauranga - Education Payroll is a Crown entity that delivers pay to schools and kura on behalf of the Ministry of Education. With around 200 employees, we deliver one of the largest and most complex payrolls in Australasia.
The combination of great people and cutting-edge technology enable us to pay around 100,000 teachers and support staff across around 2,500 schools accurately and on time every fortnight. That’s approximately $294 million a fortnight and $7.7 billion per annum.
We have permanent Payroll Advisor positions available and fixed term opportunities through to the end of March 2026.
During an initial training period, you’ll learn how to support users of the school’s payroll system to ensure payroll instructions are processed accurately and on time.
Your responsibilities will include :
processing payroll transactions in line with legislation and employment agreements
providing support to customers via email, phoneand our ticketing system
reviewing data for accuracy and maintaining accurate records.
A typical day as a Payroll Advisor includes joining your team for a morning hui, supporting our customers, processing various payroll changes, and enjoying social interactions with our friendly teams.
To set you up for success as a Payroll Advisor you should be able to demonstrate :
computer literacy and ability to learn new systems and software
an ability to analyse information and solve problems
good written and verbal communication skills
willingness to learn and ask questions.

If successful, you’ll be appointed at $60,220 per annum. Our office is in central Wellington, close to the train station for an easy commute. We primarily work in office with the possibility to work from home up to two days a week once fully competent in the role.
Our teams are made up of payroll experts with decades of experience, who will support you to learn all about the schools’ payroll and how to best support our customers to deliver timely and accurate pay.
