About the role

In this fast‑paced, exciting role you will play a key role providing legal advice and advocacy services to Social Workers and other staff. Your work will involve significant courtroom time, conducting litigation on behalf of Oranga Tamariki, with a focus on ensuring good outcomes for tamariki and their whānau.

The key work occurs outside of the courtroom – advising and collaborating. This is a role where your relationships in the community will enable you to work collectively to make a positive difference for our tamariki.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and advocacy services to Social Workers and other staff.
  • Conduct litigation on behalf of Oranga Tamariki in courts.
  • Advise and collaborate with staff and community partners.
  • Help make a positive difference for our tamariki and rangatahi.

Qualifications

  • Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand and holding (or eligible for) a practising certificate.
  • 3+ years PQE in a relevant area of law.

  • Driven to ensure all tamariki are in loving whānau and communities.
  • Committed to honouring treaty commitments to Māori and improving long‑term outcomes.
  • Excellent communication, digital and written skills.
  • Strong integrity, honesty, and team‑player attitude.
  • A clean driver’s licence.
  • Understanding and appreciation of cross‑cultural practices; knowledge of tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples’ culture.
  • Experience in family or criminal / criminal youth justice law, or genuine passion and interest.

    Remuneration

    Annual remuneration for this position starts between $77,886 and $86,082 for the Solicitor role and $90,429 and $100,019 for the Intermediate Solicitor role, dependent on experience.
