About the role

We are currently seeking an Environmental Health Officer to join our team, based in Martinborough —a region celebrated for its award-winning wine, artisan food, and lively calendar of community events. This role offers the perfect blend of professional challenge and lifestyle appeal.

You’ll be part of a small team who is responsible for a wide range of environmental health functions, including food licensing, licensing under the Health Act 1956, liquor licensing, and managing environmental issues such as trade waste, noise monitoring, infectious diseases, and bylaw enforcement. You’ll also play a key role in health promotion initiatives and provide education and advice to the public on environmental health and licensing matters.

As part of a supportive and community-focused team, you’ll help ensure public health and safety across the district—while enjoying the unique benefits of living and working in one of New Zealand’s most scenic and culturally rich rural communities.

Preferred Candidate Requirements

National Diploma in Environmental Health Science or equivalent as outlined on the MOH site ( Environmental health officers | Ministry of Health NZ ). If you do not meet this requirement your application cannot be considered.

Working knowledge of relevant NZ statutes, regulations and codes of practice.

Relevant practical experience, and preferably in the application of public and environmental health in a local government situation, however we will also consider a graduate for this role.

Strong interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated commitment to public service and the ability to be able to work with a diverse range of people.

The ability to maintain objectivity where required.

Proven conflict resolution skills.

The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Applicants must have a full clean driver’s license and must be eligible to work in NZ.
