Company Description

Ko te whare Pūtaiao | The Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland is the leading science faculty in New Zealand and one of the largest in Australasia. It undertakes world‑class research across the physical, biological, and computational sciences. More than 8,000 students study in our 10 schools and departments, learning from internationally renowned lecturers. Our staff and students can connect with our flagship Tuākana, Women in Science, Parenting, and Rainbow networks, and our Waipapa Marae. Our mission and values place a strong emphasis on both our student body and our scholarly community, and we work with both community and enterprise to advance the well‑being of the peoples of Auckland and New Zealand, with a clear commitment to pursuing sustainability.

Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team

Our team consists of four experienced technicians specialising in Physical, Organic, and Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, along with large first‑year teaching courses and an off‑site Wine Science technician. We’re supported by a dedicated technical assistant. Each member brings their own area of expertise, and we work collaboratively to provide an engaging, high‑quality learning experience for our undergraduate students.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Are you a natural problem‑solver who loves being hands‑on in the lab and supporting student learning? Do you enjoy preparing practical resources, developing experiments, and maintaining analytical instruments to ensure smooth, engaging laboratory sessions?

We’re looking for a Senior Technician – Analytical Instruments to join our School of Chemical Sciences within the Faculty of Science. This is a great opportunity for an experienced, proactive technician who thrives in a dynamic undergraduate teaching environment.

In this role, the majority of your time will be spent in the teaching laboratories, ensuring practical classes run safely, smoothly, and efficiently. You’ll be responsible for preparing and maintaining student resources (including instruments, reagents, and consumables), assisting with class setup, and supporting other team members in the delivery of high‑quality teaching experiences.

You’ll also maintain, troubleshoot, and optimise a suite of analytical instruments (such as HPLC, GC, GC‑MS, AAS, IC, and UV‑VIS spectrometers) used across teaching and research. This balance of technical maintenance and teaching support makes the role varied, rewarding, and central to the success of our laboratory courses.

Ngā Haepapa Matua | Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, test, and maintain reagents, standards, and solutions to support undergraduate laboratory practicals.
  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain analytical instruments and laboratory equipment used in teaching and research.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues, carry out routine maintenance, and ensure instruments operate safely and reliably.
  • Provide high‑quality technical support to students and academic staff, ensuring effective and safe use of laboratory resources.
  • Coordinate and assist with the setup, delivery, and pack‑down of laboratory classes, maintaining an organised and efficient teaching environment.
  • Contribute to the development, testing, and refinement of experiments and teaching materials in collaboration with academic staff.
  • Deliver demonstrations and training sessions that enhance student understanding of analytical and instrumental techniques.
  • Champion health, safety, and sustainability practices, including participation in initiatives such as My Green Lab and waste minimisation.

Role : Full‑time, permanent (37.5 hours per week). Start date : January 2026.

Remuneration : $77,100 – $88,900 per annum, dependent on skills and experience.
