About the role
We are looking for a Ranger Biodiversity to join the Tara iti / New Zealand Fairy Tern team, focused on predator control across Auckland and Northland.
The role is full-time, permanent, and based in the Mahurangi / Warkworth office.
As the next predator control Ranger, you will lead and manage predator control operations, plan and evaluate initiatives, and help protect this endangered species.
Responsibilities
Plan, implement, and evaluate predator control operations throughout Auckland and Northland.
Lead predator control activities at New Zealand Fairy Tern breeding, nesting, and feeding sites.
Contribute to and implement predator control plans across multiple sites.
Provide training and support to colleagues on best-practice predator control practices.
Maintain and operate a variety of traps, bait stations, and related equipment.
Collaborate with community stakeholders, iwi, hapu, and whanau Maori on conservation projects.
Qualifications and Experience
Experience carrying out predator control operations, including trapping, baiting, and poisoning.
Knowledge of DOC series, SA, and leghold traps, including maintenance.
Experience setting up and running bait station lines with pesticides.
Knowledge of rats, mustelids, and other predator species and their preferred environments.
Experience planning predator control operations and interpreting operational plans.
Familiarity with GIS applications such as TrapNZ.
Current firearms licence (personal firearm not required) and willingness to use firearms for predator control.
Full New Zealand driver's licence and ability to drive a manual vehicle, including off-road.
Current first aid certificate.
Ability to work in a team and provide training to others.
Friendly, motivated, and committed to conservation.
Desirable for the Role
Experience working in New Zealand's back country.
Knowledge of GPS use in back country work.
Grow Safe qualification.
4WD qualification (NZQA) and experience driving 4WD in back country and coastal terrain.
Familiarity with trail camera technology.
Experience in contract management.
LUV qualification (NZQA or similar).
Experience engaging with community stakeholders on predator control projects.
Experience using kayak or canoe.
Ability to manage large inventory of traps and bait across multiple sites.
General knowledge of and interest in conservation in New Zealand.

Salary and Working Hours
Salary range : $65,070 to $75,981, based on relevant skills and experience.
Total weekly hours : 40 (full-time).

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory.
