Secondary (Years 7–15) / wharekura, Certificated teacher — Te reo Māori — 1MU

Te Kura Kōhine o Ahuriri - Napier Girls’ High School sits upon Mataruahou, overlooking Ahuriri, Napier, and provides education for students in Y9-13. Our kura is one of the oldest in Aotearoa for kōhine, young women. Our values of Manaakitanga, Kairangi Whaiaro and Whanaungatanga underpin our kaupapa of empowering ākonga to achieve success and fulfilment for themselves, whānau and the wider community.

“Mā te whakapapa pounamu, ka puta mai te taonga, he rite anō te reo Māori” - As we smoothen the layers of greenstone, the treasure from within emerges… much like the Māori language. We are seeking an earnest and passionate teacher to join our Languages department for a maternity cover in 2025 - 2026. We have 5 levels of Te Reo Māori at our kura, all classes are connected by the tūākana / teina relationships of our atua wāhine. This position will grow the success of our reo Māori classes, as well as work alongside our kāhui Māori - Māori student council to support kaupapa Māori through-out our school. We welcome any kaiako with connections, skills and ideas to share.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality teaching of Te Reo Māori to students in Y9-13.
  • Contribute to the development of te reo Māori curriculum and student engagement.
  • Collaborate with kāhui Māori, staff, and whānau to support kaupapa Māori across the school.
  • Support rangatahi leadership development and participate in kapa haka, hākinakina where appropriate.

Qualifications and desirable attributes

  • A teaching qualification
  • Ability to converse in and teach Te Reo Māori
  • Enjoy working with rangatahi
  • Ability to build relationships with tauira, whānau, school staff and community
  • Experience with Kapa Haka, Hākinakina and fostering Māori leadership is an advantage.
  • Terms and start date

    This is a full-time, fixed-term maternity cover position, beginning in October 2025; a later start date, up to January 2026, could be considered.
