The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) supports the government of the day by leading, advising, stewarding and delivering activities across the public sector, and by providing dedicated advice and support to the Governor-General, Prime Minister and portfolio Ministers.
About The Role
The Director, National Security Policy and Coordination is a senior leadership role shaping how New Zealand anticipates, responds to, and influences a rapidly evolving global security environment.
This role leads the development and integration of strategic, evidence-based national security policy and drives system-wide coordination across government.
The Director works closely with senior leaders, domestic and international partners — including Five Eyes allies — to ensure New Zealand\'s policy positions are coherent, forward-looking, and aligned with national priorities.
This is a unique opportunity to influence system-wide public service outcomes, strengthen trusted partnerships, and contribute to New Zealand\'s security, resilience, and strategic impact.
In this role
Lead the development and integration of strategic, evidence-based national security policy that informs decisions at the highest levels of government.
Drive system-wide coordination across agencies to ensure national security strategies and responses are coherent, forward-looking, and aligned with government priorities.
Represent New Zealand\'s interests in international security forums, building trusted relationships with key partners, including Five Eyes allies.
Provide high-quality analysis and advice on emerging threats, risks, and intelligence to support decision-making in a complex, rapidly evolving security environment.
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing, inclusive team of policy advisors and analysts, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.
Champion the resilience and readiness of the national security system, supporting coordinated responses to national and international crises.
About You
We\'re seeking someone who brings
Proven senior leadership experience in national security, international relations, or a closely related policy field, with the ability to lead complex, high-impact programmes.
Strong strategic thinking and policy expertise, with the ability to anticipate emerging threats and translate complex issues into actionable advice.
Experience working across government and with international partners, including Five Eyes or equivalent intelligence and security communities, building trusted relationships and influencing outcomes.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills, capable of engaging effectively with Ministers, senior officials, and international counterparts.
A track record of leading, mentoring, and developing high-performing teams in diverse and challenging environments.
Demonstrated political acumen, sound judgement, and integrity in navigating sensitive, high-stakes national and international policy contexts.
Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Special security clearance.
