Job descriptionStudents vary from people learning the alphabet to those wanting to write essays, but most are somewhere in between. They don’t have the skills they need for everyday life. Our students range in age from 14 to 65 and are from all walks of life. We ask for your preferences about the kind of person you would be comfortable working with. Your enthusiasm, patience, and commitment are what matter most. Volunteers for this role will be teaching the basics of reading and writing. You will be working one to one with a student, by video-conference. Each coach will be coaching three times a week for a minimum of half an hour each time, as well as doing the planning for these meetings. Attend professional development workshops online. The main qualities you need are : be friendly, patient, love helping others, and have an analytical mind. Our training and support covers the rest. You will need moderate technology skills. You will be required to download and use our messaging app, Slack, for communication and our wiki library of resources. We have tech support people who can help you learn to use these tools, if you are not confident. Using them is an essential part of the role. This role requires long-term commitment (a minimum of a year) and a fair bit of your time. However, it can be flexible and is very rewarding. Good computer skills. Excellent spoken English, reading, and writing skills. Must be fluent in English (verbal and written). Reliable. An analytical mind and a friendly personality. NZ based.
