Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery

In pursuit of excellence, the Faculty of Medicine – Dunedin, in association with Health New Zealand – Southern, seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. The position provides an excellent opportunity for a clinical academic to establish themselves in one of the leading medical schools in Australasia.

The appointee will provide leadership in teaching and research in Orthopaedic Surgery while supporting an effective and efficient service for orthopaedic surgery patients in the Otago and Southland regions. There are research opportunities for wider collaboration with other researchers in the University’s well‑regarded medical and medical science departments such as Anatomy, Pathology and Preventive and Social Medicine.

In addition to holding the position at the University of Otago, the appointee will concurrently hold a position as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Health New Zealand – Southern. This joint University / Hospital position will be held as a single contract; the two separate roles equal the equivalent of one full‑time position.

Academic Component (0.5 FTE)

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care – Dunedin and appointed to the position of Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor on the basis of academic achievement, skills and experience. The incumbent will be responsible for teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and will have significant opportunities for clinically‑based research.

Clinical Component (0.5 FTE)

Health New Zealand – Southern provides services to 350,000 people across diverse communities. This position is based in Dunedin and requires participation in a shared roster and after‑hours on‑call roster. Clinical duties and patient care including outpatient clinics and operating will form 50% of weekly duties. An additional payment (0.2 FTE) is provided for clinical duties performed outside of regular hours in negotiation with Health New Zealand – Southern. The successful candidate must be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Experience in spine and paediatric subspecialties is preferred.
