About the role
The Key Account Executive will drive revenue and business growth by developing and executing strategic sales and regional growth plans, with a focus on expanding rail freight services. You will build and nurture strong customer relationships, identify new market opportunities, and work cross-functionally to maximise regional performance. You will create and implement tailored regional strategies aligned with national objectives to enhance regional uptake of rail services.
You will also develop KPIs that reflect mutual value, drive yield and volume improvements, and increase KiwiRail’s presence across the assigned region. Active engagement with internal stakeholders is essential to align capability with customer requirements and budget targets.
Key responsibilities
- Regional Sales Strategy & Growth : develop and implement regional growth plans to increase rail freight market share; identify opportunities; use market intelligence to adjust services; collaborate with the wider sales team.
- Key Account & Relationship Management : maintain regular strategic contact with key stakeholders; ensure customer satisfaction and retention; manage multiple stakeholder levels within accounts; identify up-sell / cross-sell opportunities.
- Revenue & Pricing Management : ensure pricing supports cost recovery and regional competitiveness; monitor revenue targets and forecasts; reduce poor-quality service costs; explore value-added opportunities; ensure pricing compliance.
- Operational & Interdepartmental Collaboration : align service capability with customer demand; facilitate cross-team communication; resolve regional operational issues affecting satisfaction and delivery.
- Budget & Financial Responsibility : contribute to regional budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning; drive cost-reduction initiatives; monitor debtor management.
- Reporting & Insights : provide regional sales performance reports and customer insights; report on pipeline weekly; share market intelligence with leadership.
Skills and experience
5–7 years of experience in sales, business development, or key account managementProven experience developing and executing growth strategiesDeep understanding of freight and / or logistics, preferably railStrong analytical skills and ability to interpret financial and performance dataExcellent interpersonal and negotiation skillsCapable of managing complex customer accounts and projectsDesirable : experience with regional economic development agencies or supply chain stakeholders; transport, infrastructure, or industrial B2B experience; familiarity with CRM tools; ability to influence cross-functional teamsOther requirements : ability to travel within New Zealand; current valid NZ Driver’s LicenceQualifications : relevant tertiary qualification in business, sales, logistics, or related field; relevant industry certifications or equivalent experienceWhat’s in it for you
