Why is this a great role This is a relatively new role for the South Island Eating Disorders (SIEDS) whichis aimed to improve the experience for young tangata whai ora (up to the age of25 years) and their families and whanau on their treatment journey through ourservice. The role will act as a bridge between cliniciansand tangata whaiora to improve communication and clinical outcomes. Pathways tocare and access to care for tangata whai orawill improve, and this will have a beneficial effect on their experiencewhile they are in the service. The lived experience voice and perspective have animportant role to play in the treatment and recovery for people who have aneating disorder. This role is relatively new to our service which specialisesin the treatment of eating disorders and is an exciting opportunity to exploreand continue to develop ways to enhance the relationships between young tangatawhaiora and the treating team, with a view to improving and maximising treatmentoutcomes. You will also work with families and whanau. Giventhe important role they play in supporting their family member and their directinvolvement in treatment we anticipate they will feel supported while they walkalongside their family whanau member. We are a specialist team treatingpeople who have a range of eating disorders. You will be based at HillmortonHospital and will work across our community and inpatient teams from where weprovide direct clinical care to young tangata whai ora in the WaitahaCanterbury area and liaison, supervision and support to specialist mental healthclinicians throughout the South Island. You will develop peer relationships with young people up to the age of 25 who arebeing treated by SIEDS. Your lived experience will inspire hope and offerencouragement in their journey through the service. You will be a memberof the multi-disciplinary team, contributing to the team culture and developingrelationships with your SIEDS colleagues. Using clearcommunication and being able to articulatepeer support principles, values and tasks.Including contributing to written documentation and quality initiatives. About the Role You will beworking with young tangata whai ora, developing peer relationships with them which are basedon mutuality and authenticity. You will use your lived experience to inspire hope andoffer encouragement in their journey through the service. You will be a memberof the multi-disciplinary team, contributing to the team culture and developingrelationships with your SIEDS colleagues. You will use clearcommunication and be able to articulatepeer support principles, values and tasks.Including contributing to written documentation and quality initiatives. At times peer support maybe provided in agroup setting 'Training to be provided if and when group facilitation skillsare needed. You will challenge stigmaand discrimination and proactively promote inclusion and diversity. About you As a youth peer support worker,you must have your own lived experience as a young person of having had aneating disorder which required you to access treatment. It is desirable to have a sound knowledge of thecommunity and NGO mental health sector, particularly peer support communityproviders so that practical information and connections can be made with thepeople you are working with.
