McMaster & Heap is a 10-veterinarian full-time equivalent small animal, family-owned practice in Christchurch. As well as a strong primary practice, we receive referrals from Canterbury and the South Island for ophthalmology, ultrasound, echo, some oncology medicine, radioactive iodine and surgery. We have a very experienced team of veterinarians, veterinary nurses and support staff, many of whom have particular fields of interest.

We are BESTPRACTICE accredited, we are a living wage employer and staff receive a health insurance package through Southern Cross.

We use Ezyvet, Smartflow and have a full IDEXX suite.

Steve Heap has been ophthalmology referrals for more than 25 years at McMaster & Heap. Jack Newton-Jackson joined us three years ago and has seen an increasing number of referrals over the past three years. Unfortunately, Jack is heading back to his family farm in the North Island, so we are looking to replace his position.

We are seeking a candidate who is enthusiastic and passionate about ophthalmology. The successful candidate will have a postgraduate qualification in ophthalmology, or at a minimum working towards this.

Currently, Jack's full-time position is at least 50% ophthalmology including ophthalmology surgery and is growing. The remainder of his position is largely consulting and medicine workups.

There is some scope for this to be different depending on the successful candidate but at this stage we are envisaging the role to be similar.

We have the caseload, specialised equipment (including Zeiss Vario 700 microscope and Whitestar signature Phaco machine), spacious facility and highly skilled staff to provide a very high standard of care and a very rewarding job.
