About the Role

The Software Consultant operates within the Digital Applications and Products team, playing a key role in the delivery and operational support of software solutions that enable high-quality healthcare services across Aotearoa New Zealand. Working collaboratively with Architects, Product Owners, Business Analysts, Testers, and fellow Developers, the role contributes across the full software development lifecycle from requirements gathering and design to development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support. The Software Consultant is responsible for developing new applications, enhancing existing systems, troubleshooting issues, and providing incident support to ensure solutions are robust, scalable, secure, and aligned with Te Whatu Ora's strategic objectives.

About the Team / Service / Location

The Software Consultant sits within the Digital Applications and Products team, part of the wider Digital Services function under Te Whatu Ora. Reporting into the Software Delivery Manager, this role is responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting robust, scalable, and secure software applications that underpin high-quality healthcare delivery across Aotearoa New Zealand. The team works closely with Architects, Product Owners, Business Analysts, Testers, and other Developers to ensure solutions meet organisational needs and align with strategic goals. The Software Consultant plays a vital role in contributing to the full software development lifecycle, supporting continuous improvement, troubleshooting, and incident management to maintain optimal system performance and functionality.

About you

You are an experienced software professional with a strong background in integration development and a focus on both delivery and operations. You bring a thorough understanding of the full software development lifecycle, from gathering requirements to deployment and ongoing maintenance. With experience working in complex enterprise environments—preferably within the health sector—you are comfortable navigating technical challenges and ensuring solutions align with organisational goals. You will also have the following skills and experience to support your success in the role :

  • Minimum 5+ years' experience in integration development with a focus on delivery and operations
  • Proven expertise with integration platforms such as Mulesoft, Active MQ, JCAPS, Rhapsody, or Solace (2+ years)
  • Experience working within Agile and Waterfall methodologies and leading small development projects
  • Knowledge of health sector standards including HL7V2 and FHIR interfaces is highly advantageous
  • Working for Health New Zealand
