The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) supports the government of the day by leading, advising, stewarding and delivering activities across the public sector, and by providing dedicated advice and support to the Governor-General, Prime Minister and portfolio Ministers.

About The Role

This is your opportunity to lead at the heart of government and shape how Aotearoa New Zealand builds national resilience and anticipates, prepares for, and responds to complex and evolving National Risks.

The Director, National Risk and Resilience is a pivotal senior leadership role within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC).

You\'ll set direction for New Zealand\'s National Risk and Resilience priorities, driving integration and leading collaboration across government, iwi / Maori, business, civil society, and international partners.

Your leadership will ensure New Zealand\'s National Resilience System is integrated, cohesive, future-focused, and effective.

You\'ll influence decision-makers at the highest levels, drive improvements in national risk management capability, and strengthen our ability to manage systemic challenges — from climate change and natural hazards to economic disruption and emerging security threats.

In this role

Provide national leadership on New Zealand\'s National Risk and resilience priorities.

Shape forward-looking policy advice and ensure alignment between national risk management strategies and broader national objectives.

Build system-wide capability to identify, assess, and manage National Risks effectively across agencies and sectors.

Drive cross-government collaboration and build strong partnerships with iwi / Maori, business, and international stakeholders.

Lead and inspire a high-performing, future-focused team to deliver collective results.

Deliver innovative solutions and adopt global best practice to improve national resilience.

Influence Ministers, senior officials, and sector leaders to enable evidence-based decision-making on complex National Risk and resilience issues.

About You - Mou Ano

We\'re seeking an exceptional strategic leader who thrives in complex, high-stakes environments and brings the credibility to influence across systems.

You will have :

Extensive senior leadership experience delivering results in dynamic, multi-agency environments.

Proven success shaping policy, strategy, and risk management approaches at a national or system-wide level.

Deep understanding of systemic and emerging National Risks, with the ability to integrate risk insights into policy, strategic and operational planning.

Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills, including experience working with Ministers, iwi / Maori, and sector leaders.

The ability to see the big picture, anticipate future risks, and deliver innovative, practical solutions.

Calm, credible, and adaptive leadership, especially in high-pressure or fast-changing situations.

Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Special security clearance.
