About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Data Analyst to join the Tourism Domain sub-team of the Domains team in Data Service Delivery (DSD) unit at the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE).
As a Senior Data Analyst, you will lead complex analytical projects, delivering high-quality and customer-focused data and insights that support strategic decisions.
You'll work closely with peers and stakeholders to translate requirements into robust, data-driven solutions that enhance the value of the Domains team and the DSD unit.
You will also ensure quality and consistency of advice and practices within the Domains team and the DSD unit.
The ideal candidate will have significant technical expertise in statistics and / or economics with strong skills in R, SQL and advanced Excel.
You will also have a good understanding of how to work with time series data, and how evidence-based decisions are supported by data and analysis.
Knowledge of data pertinent to tourism and its contribution to national and regional economies – such as spend, visitor arrivals and experiences – is highly valued.

About the Team
The Domains team in the Data Service Delivery Unit supports policy analysis, regulatory monitoring, and decision-making by delivering high-quality, trusted data assets and innovative analytical solutions.
The RSBED & SCI Domain sub-team is one of the five domain sub-teams that collectively support all MBIE portfolios.
The Tourism Domain sub-team is responsible for building data systems and knowledge bases, being steward of data and analytics products, and providing data, analysis and modelling advice to support both the tourism sector and supporting policy decision-making related to tourism and hospitality.

Significant experience in data management, statistical analysis and economic modelling.
Significant experience in time series analysis and forecasting methodologies.
Experience in designing and developing solutions from complex data sources.
Strong experience using programming languages (e.g. R) and other tools (e.g. Excel) to wrangle, mutate and present data.
Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. advanced Excel, R and Power BI) to develop dashboards, infographics and reports is highly desirable.
Confidence engaging with diverse stakeholders and clear communication skills.
A postgraduate qualification (Master's or PhD) in Statistics, Economics, Econometrics or a related field.
Three+ years of demonstrable relevant experience.
Have a legal right to live and work in New Zealand and be able to satisfy the Ministry's security clearance requirements.
