Train With Us To Become a NZOIA Bush Leader!

Kirikiriroa & St Peter's Scout Group, one of New Zealand's largest and fastest-growing Scout Groups, was one of 15 groups granted Royal New Zealand Navy Recognition after achieving the highest standards in Scouting and seamanship.

We are looking to appoint a

female Kaiarahi (leader)

to support female Scouts by training as a New Zealand Outdoor Instructors' Association Bush Leader with Overnight Endorsement.

About The Training

The holder of the NZOIA Bush Leader with Overnight Endorsement qualification can manage and instruct groups on overnight experiences below the bush line in partnership with other Kaiarahi.

Participants may be sleeping in tents, under flysheets, in backcountry huts or rock shelters.

Competencies Safeguarding

  • place the well-being of young people as your paramount concern acting in the best interests of children and young people at all times.

Youth Empowerment

  • Follow the "Youth-Leading, Adult Supporting" principle by empowering young people to achieve their goals for their Scout experience.
  • Youth Programme

  • use the Scouts Aotearoa programme framework to support young people to develop and lead their own adventurous, fun, challenging, active, and inclusive Programme.
  • Actively seek information and skills relevant to the role, to improve competency as a Kaiarahi.

    Risk Management

  • take responsibility for identifying and reporting risks within the three main risk areas of programme risk, outdoor adventure risk (away from the hall), and premises risk (Scout hall and its environment).
  • Youth Worker Skills

  • use positive youth development practices to support young people to flourish and grow into people who can make a positive difference in their communities.
  • Empower young people to develop and lead their own programme and experience adventure.

    Support young people to develop their leadership skills.

    Work with young people in a way that keeps them safe and supports their wellbeing.

    Act in accordance with the Scout Law (values) and Promise.

    Collaborative team player, Fun, youth centric, active listener, patient, and kind.

    Kaiarahi takes direction from their

    Group Leader

    , who is responsible for managing and leading the Group.

    Work in collaboration with other Kaiarahi

    to achieve a harmonious and effective team approach.

    Specialist internal and external advisers and trainers

    are available to share their skills, knowledge, and support.

    You will work to

    support Whanau

    to better understand their families, their backgrounds, concerns and expectations.

    Requirements :

    Pre-requisites to attending the course are :

    Must be 18 years or over

    Hold a current first aid certificate

    Attend a one-day Scouts Aotearoa Intro to Tramping Course run by Kirikiriroa & St Peter's NZOI Bush Leaders with Overnight Endorsement

    Have the following experience in a logbook :

    At least five nights experience camping in tents, flies, rock shelters, and five nights experience sleeping in backcountry huts.

    At least five nights of additional experience as a co-leader or assistant leader overnight camping and in backcountry huts.

    A Police background check is required for this role.

    Time commitment :

    For the NZOIA Bush Leader with Overnight Endorsement Qualification, Scouts Aotearoa will pay for you to attend :

    Three-day course, usually a Friday to a Sunday, accompanied by a two-day assessment, usually a Saturday and Sunday.

    Regular Scout Section Meetings :

    During Term 4 & 1, every Tuesday, 1800-2030hrs, Lake Rotoroa - Scouts focus on Boating, Paddling and Water Safety Adventure Skills.

    During Terms 2 & 3, every Tuesday, 1830-2030hrs, at HQ (St Peter's Park, 31 Lorne Street, Kirikiriroa Hamilton)
