About the Role

We currently have a vacancy for a registered nurse to join our District Nursing Service. The position covers rural bases within South Waikato.

We require flexibility from staff to work across South Waikato as part of the District Nurse position.

This is a 7 day a week service with hours between 8am - 5pm, and the successful applicant will be required to work rostered duties, including weekends and some on-call.

About the Team / Service

District nurses provide a wide range of services in their local communities, often visiting people in their home. We work closely with allied health staff such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

District nurses provide a comprehensive range of quality, patient-focused, professional and holistic nursing services to patients through-out the life-span in the community setting. This requires a person who is adaptable, dynamic and able to work autonomously. The district nurse role includes; advanced assessment, management, support and education for wound management, compression therapy, IV management, palliative / end of life care in the rural setting, continence assessment, catheter management, ostomy management, assessment for acute personal care and home help, support with home oxygen / respiratory patients, rheumatic fever secondary prevention prophylaxis and liaison / referrals with other health professionals.

About Tokoroa

Tokoroa Hospital is a vital healthcare provider with a 17-bed inpatient ward and an emergency department that handles approximately 14,000 presentations annually. We offer on-site plain film radiology and laboratory services, with 24 / 7 on-call availability. The emergency department is equipped with a modern point-of-care ultrasound for those eager to use or learn new skills. In addition, we support palliative care services within the community, helping patients remain close to their families. The hospital works in close collaboration with primary care providers, including two General Practices on-site and a third in Tokoroa town, alongside visiting specialists from Waikato Hospital. A four-bed primary birthing unit is also available, led by an experienced charge midwife and team. We pride ourselves on our collaborative relationships with community organisations, including the South Waikato Pacific Island Community NGO and the Raukawa Charitable Trust.

Tokoroa is ideally located as a gateway to the Central North Islands natural beauty, offering a unique blend of outdoor recreation and rich Māori heritage. The town is surrounded by lush bush walks, serene lakes, and scenic reserves, perfect for hiking, fishing, and boating. Visitors and locals can explore historic sites like Pokaiwhenua and Hatupatu rock, where ancient Māori legends come to life. Tokoroa is nestled among dairy farmlands and plantation forests, boasting a vibrant community of over 25 nationalities. About you

  • Current New Zealand registered nurse practicing certificate
  • A full current NZ drivers licence with no restrictions
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a registered nurse
  • The ability to work effectively within a team
  • Sensitivity to cultural aspects and the ability to apply the Treaty of Waitangi principles to practice
  • Excellent assessment skills and time management
  • The ability to work autonomously

It would be an advantage to have previous district nursing experience and / or an advanced knowledge in wound management, as well as palliative care experience.

An orientation program will be provided, and the start date can be negotiated.
