About us

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) is the leading advocate for surgical standards, professionalism and surgical education in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. The College is a not-for-profit organisation that represents more than 8600 surgeons and 1300 surgical trainees and Specialist International Medical Graduates.

RACS also supports healthcare and surgical education in the Asia-Pacific region and is a substantial funder of surgical research. There are nine surgical specialties in Australasia being : Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery.

About the role

In this role you will support the effective assessment and coordination of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in Aotearoa New Zealand. This role is pivotal to maintaining the high standards of surgical training and practice across the region.

Reporting to the General Manager, Aotearoa New Zealand, and working closely with the IMG Lead (AoNZ), you will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of IMG assessment processes, in alignment with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) requirements. The role also involves liaising with a wide range of stakeholders including IMG applicants, assessors, hospital-based supervisors, and internal RACS departments.

You are a highly organised individual with excellent written communication and stakeholder engagement skills. You bring sound judgement and discretion to your work and are comfortable managing multiple priorities. You enjoy working both independently and collaboratively across a diverse team.

Key Responsibilities include :

  • Coordinate the full IMG assessment process, including preparation and review of vocational registration applications.
  • Liaise with the MCNZ and internal stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate processing of applications and assessments.
  • Provide executive-level support to the IMG Lead (AoNZ) and related committees.
  • Assist in monitoring the progress of IMGs under supervised assessment and in the preparation of formal recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to regular reporting and data analysis.
  • Support RACS’ quarterly publication Cutting Edge and provide secretariat support to subcommittees and interest groups.

This is a newly created full-time ongoing role.

Skills and Experience

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field such as health, education, or management
  • Experience supporting vocational registration pathways or working with international medical professionals
  • Working knowledge of IMG processes
  • Proven ability to manage complex documentation and provide strategic-level support
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective relationships across internal and external stakeholders
  • A high level of attention to detail and professionalism
