Principal Advisor Avoidable – Mortality Review Management Group

Full Time | Permanent | Aucklandor Wellington

At Health Quality & Safety Commission Te Tahu Hauora (the Commission) we work with clinicians, health providers, whanau and consumers to improve health and disability support services across New Zealand.

Our goal is to ensure all groups get safe and high-quality care that matches their health needs, including improving access to care for those with needs that are not currently being addressed.

The Commission is a Crown Agent with a board responsible to the Minister of Health.

Reduce avoidable deaths for Maori, Pacific and other high need communities through understanding the causes and working to prevent future deaths.

The role :

  • Lead analysis and reviews to identify causes and opportunities to reduce avoidable mortality.
  • Advise governance groups and stakeholders on avoidable mortality findings.
  • Work with experts and clinicians to classify and review mortality cases.
  • Translate quantitative and qualitative data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Co-design data products for ongoing monitoring.
  • Build partnerships to embed lived experience and whanau in mortality review processes.
  • Support implementation efforts to reduce future deaths.
  • Prepare clear, concise reports and advice for senior leadership, highlighting risks and trends.
  • Maintain relationships across the health and other sectors to support action to sustainably reduce mortality.

About you :

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in clinical, health, social science, quality or related field.
  • Solid understanding of how health inequities developed in New Zealand and policy responses to reduce avoidable mortality.
  • Experience working with Maori, Pacific, Indian, rural, disabled and low-income communities in culturally safe ways.
  • Ability to integrate qualitative and quantitative evidence and respect Te Ao Maori and Western knowledge.
  • Excellent writing, research and plain-language communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to maintain emotional resilience when regularly exposed to sensitive or distressing material.
  • High attention to detail, integrity, sound judgement and able to manage competing priorities.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality with sensitive, complex material.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and anti-racism cultural safety practice.
