Deep Field Games is looking for an experienced Game Designer III to join our New Zealand‑based team.

Role Overview

  • The Game Designer will be charged with creating, overseeing and balancing an array of game features and mechanics in current and future projects.
  • They will work closely with the Design Director and code team to develop new features and improve existing ones.
  • The duties of this role may extend to other Design‑related tasks as agreed upon by the Game Designer and Design Director.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work with the Design team to create, deliver, and evolve new features such as weapons, items and NPCs, and improve existing systems.
  • Balance multiplayer game systems and features in and around these systems.
  • Responsible for following the design pipeline on all tasked assets : discussion, design, prototyping, implementation oversight, refinement, fixes.
  • Monitor community feedback and filter suggestions from the community for potential implementation into the game.
  • Requirements and Qualifications

  • High proficiency with Unreal Engine interface and data structures.
  • Experience creating game features and functionality on multiple commercially‑released game projects.
  • A strong understanding of design principles, game mechanics, player psychology, and advanced design theory.
  • Experience with production software (Jira, Trello, etc.).
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work within established pipelines and project scope.
  • Strong work ethic and collaborative attitude.
  • Capable of working independently with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially when writing design documentation intended for programmers or other team members of other disciplines.
  • Preferred Additional Experience

  • Familiarity with Blueprint design and / or scripting languages for prototyping and implementing game mechanics, including UE5 Behavior Trees.
  • Experience with design for first‑person shooters and survival crafting games.

  • Competitive contract : up to $125K (NZD) (depending on experience).
