    About the Role

    We have the opportunity available to join the National Public Health Service (NPHS) Intelligence Directorate as a Principal Analyst in the Improvement and Performance team. This is a permanent, full-time role.

    Principal Analysts are senior roles in Health NZ, with strong subject matter expertise, writing and relationship skills and capable of leading a portfolio of work. This role will play a leading role in the development and delivery of analytics and reporting capabilities to enable more efficient and effective delivery of public health intelligence.

    This role provides strong technical or professional subject matter expertise, data analysis activities and interpretation in relevant areas. You would lead engagement across a complex set of stakeholders to deliver evidence-based recommendations and decisions. You would provide leadership, programme and / or project management oversight and direction on key pieces of work to support the technical delivery of public health intelligence products and services.

    The NPHS within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga / wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

    The Improvement and Performance team responsibilities include :

    • Facilitating and enabling equitable access to tools and data, including curated data assets
    • Providing advice on strategic alignment and work programme overview
    • Developing communities of practice for knowledge sharing and upskilling
    • About you

      You are someone with relevant experience in delivering and enabling a broad range of analyses, reports and data visualisations, including geo-spatial. You understand the underlying capabilities, technical infrastructure and user needs that enable high quality delivery. Seen as a thought leader and seasoned professional, you bring experience in the operationalisation of analytical tooling and process to realise business value.

      You're equipped with strong communication skills, with experience in using data storytelling and translating complex and technical information into clear and understandable language for non-technical audiences. You feel comfortable working in fast-paced and variable work environments. You're able to apply critical thinking and use sound judgement to develop options, effectively communicate them, and provide valuable advice.

    • Needs to draw on either a highly specialised expertise in a specific area or a broad / general range of experience. Typically, a seasoned professional and known as the ‘organisation expect' for an area of domain expertise
    • At least 10-15 years' experience supported with professional and industry qualifications in an area relevant to statistics, data management, data analytics, data science, visual story-telling or other relevant field
    • Experience leading and / or managing a team, including designing and managing a portfolio of work and / or developing and delivering public health intelligence strategy, products and services
    • Experience of successfully developing and implementing programme or projects across organisation function with multiple stakeholders
    • Proven ability in engaging stakeholders with diverse needs and building collaborative networks of influence
    • Broad familiarity with data analysis, geospatial and data visualisation tools (such as SQL, R or Python, R Shiny, Power BI, Qlik, Alation, DBT, ArcGIS Enterprise, QGIS)
    • Has current knowledge in relevant emergent technologies, and of trends in industry thinking
