Job description

We're looking for a Data Analyst or Senior Data Analyst to join our Market Regulation branch on a fixed-term or secondment basis until 30 June 2026, based in either our Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) or Te Whanganui-a‑Tara (Wellington) office.

This is a dynamic role where you'll contribute to the Commission's journey to become an insight-driven organisation. You'll support data engineering and analysis activities across a range of regulatory regimes, including Grocery, Telecommunications, Retail Payments, and Fuel and Dairy, helping to improve the integrity, accessibility, and usefulness of our data.

Reporting to the Data Lead in our Market Regulation branch, you'll work closely with teams across the branch to ingest, transform, and document data assets; create value with dashboards and bespoke code-based automation solutions; contribute to improving our data community and our help our team reach higher levels. Your work will align with the expectations of the Chief Data Officer and the Commission's Data Governance model.

The Commission's Market Regulation branch is responsible for market and economic regulation functions in the Telecommunications, Grocery, Retail Payments, Fuel and Dairy markets. Our aim is to improve competition in these regulated markets, which directly contributes to the Commission's vision that New Zealanders are better off because markets work well and consumers and businesses are confident market participants.

Working closely with the teams in our Market Regulation branch you will engage with, and use data and code to provide value to, our stakeholders and work closely with our Information Services team to enhance our current systems for data collection, orchestration and ingestion.

The indicative salary range for a Data Analyst is $91,432 - $107,567 and for a Senior Data Analyst $114,327 - $134,502 plus 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects their individual skills, experience, and internal relativities across the organisation.

If you have the following skills and attributes, you could make a great Senior / Data Analyst :

  • Agile / Kanban project delivery – Proven ability to plan, record and execute data initiatives within iterative frameworks.
  • SQL and either Python or R – Strong data wrangling, analysis, and automation skills, including working with diverse data sources. Geospatial experience is a bonus.
  • Data warehousing concepts – Solid grasp of relational databases and how to get the most out of them through optimisation while providing simple outputs to our users.
  • Data engineering tools – Experience ingesting data into a database such as Snowflake, with dbt for transformations and tools like Docker, Airflow, or Azure Data Factory / Functions for orchestration.
  • Version control and documentation – Familiarity with Git / Azure DevOps and best practices on how to properly document code and other outputs.
  • Data storytelling and visualisation – Ability to create clean, compelling dashboards (Power BI, Streamlit, Shiny) that drive informed decision‑making.
