We're on the lookout for a talented and curious Senior Journalist to join the Waikato Times, someone who wants to make a real impact and grow their career in a well-respected media organisation.

Based in Hamilton, you'll be responsible for generating compelling, accurate, and well-crafted stories for our website and the Waikato Times newspaper.

We are particularly interested in applicants with relevant court and or local body reporting experience, but reporters brimming with ideas and curiosity should also apply.

In This Role, Your Key Responsibilities Will Include

Producing high-quality stories and multimedia content to a consistently high standard

Reporting on major local issues, regularly breaking news and leading the conversation

Identifying and developing original ideas that inform, entertain and shape the local and national news agenda

Understanding the interests of Waikato communities and unearthing the stories that matter most

Making effective use of emerging tools, including AI, to support research, content creation and audience engagement

What We're Looking For

Strong journalistic skills, with the ability to write clearly and edit your own work

Experience in packaging content with immediate appeal across digital and multimedia formats

High level of fluency in social media platforms as newsgathering and storytelling tools

A commitment to ethical, balanced, and well-researched journalism

A passion for serving audiences with quality reporting and insight

Confidence in contributing to a collaborative newsroom environment as well as working independently

Self-motivation, excellent time management, and the ability to work to tight deadlines

A willingness to contribute ideas and take part in lively editorial discussions
