About the Role
As a Biosecurity Auditor you will deliver Border Clearance Services verification programmes for higher-risk, complex and priority businesses approved under the Biosecurity Act
In this role you will audit verification programmes that strengthen the biosecurity system, reducing the likelihood of pests and diseases impacting New Zealand.
You will deliver Border Clearance Services Verification programmes including high-risk transitional facilities, grain import systems, places of first arrival and the recognised cruise line programme.
Biosecurity Auditors deliver pre-approval verification of businesses and operators, conduct investigations and unannounced verifications where required.
This includes following up on critical non-compliances and / or gathering information required by Biosecurity New Zealand.
The role plays a vital role in protecting NZ primary industries and provides assurance for trade which underpins New Zealand's economy and wellbeing.
Key Scope of the Role
Auditing – From participating in setting audit schedules to conducting meetings with senior management teams; writing audit reports, participating in peer review and calibration exercises, and recording and maintaining biosecurity data.
Compliance – Verifying facilities that are not performing and ensuring they are compliant with relevant standards, systems, procedures, and people overseeing this activity within the facilities under the Biosecurity Act
Conducting unannounced audits is also part of the role.
About You
Is a self-starter and can work as part of a team and independently.

Has clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Has demonstrated ability to listen and engage to form professional relationships.
Has experience in making timely decisions, balancing the desire for complete information with the need to progress important or urgent matters.
Holds a full New Zealand driver's licence.
Skills & Experience
Qualification in lead auditing of quality systems or relevant experience.
In-depth understanding of biosecurity legislation and standards and its application.
Knowledge of specific sector standards (Animal and Plant Health standards) and regulatory processes (approvals, infringements) as necessary for the Biosecurity Auditor role.
Experience building and managing internal and external relationships with an assortment of stakeholders.
Understanding of ISO
Demonstrated ability to conduct audits, elicit and evaluate objective evidence, and ensure appropriate rectification of non-compliance.
Travel & Training
This role may require some travel within New Zealand.
If you are successful, you will be expected to attend and successfully complete a comprehensive training course.
About the Team
Biosecurity New Zealand (BNZ) plays a critical role in preventing harmful organisms from crossing New Zealand's borders.
It manages border and compliance activities as well as preparing for and responding to any biosecurity incursions that may occur.
The role will report to the Assistant Commissioner Central / South and work in a dedicated team with 13 Biosecurity Auditors based across the country.
You will receive comprehensive training and be provided with support from the team to ensure your success in this role.
