Head of Fire Safety – East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust

Overview

The Head of Fire Safety is responsible for leading the development and delivery of the Trust’s Fire Safety Plan and ensuring the highest standards of patient and staff safety across all sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery and continuous improvement of the organisation’s Fire Safety Plan.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate the Safety Strategy and associated plans and objectives.
  • Provide strategic guidance and technical advice on fire safety issues at all sites, engaging staff from board level down.
  • Undertake audits and inspections of fire safety systems to guarantee safe operation of firefighting equipment, emergency lighting and fire alarms.
  • Manage the Fire Safety Team and support the Associate Director of Safety in policy development, training and risk assessment activities.
  • Review and develop fire safety policies and procedures.
  • Support the Compliance Manager with fire safety data, information systems and analysis.
  • Lead training needs analysis, design and deliver training courses for fire wardens and other staff, both face‑to‑face and virtual.
  • Ensure completion of fire risk assessments across all hospital sites and satellite workplaces.
  • Contribute to the development and monitoring of a cohesive whole‑systems Fire & Safety strategy that meets legal, ethical and organisational requirements.
  • Co‑ordinate investigations of adverse fire and unwanted fire signal incidents, conduct root‑cause analysis and recommend preventative actions.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to organisational leaders on fire safety matters and support capital projects and contractors on new or remedial works.
  • Represent the Trust at safety committees and provide advice on fire safety matters.
  • Travel to and work at various Trust sites as required, including occasional visits to heights or confined spaces for risk reviews.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Head of Fire Safety or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Active membership of a recognised fire safety professional body.
  • Experience

  • Minimum two years in a senior fire safety or safety management position.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of a Fire Safety Plan.
  • Competence

  • In‑depth knowledge of fire safety legislation, regulations and best practice.
  • Strong leadership and team‑management skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
