The opportunity - Te āheinga

We're looking for a detail-oriented and proactive Accounting Officer - Credit Control (Water) to join our Finance and Planning team. Reporting to the Financial Transactions Supervisor, you'll play a key role in managing the collection of outstanding debts related to water billing.

In this position, you'll be responsible for ensuring timely and accurate recovery of water charges, maintaining strong relationships with customers and working collaboratively across the organisation to support financial sustainability.

Your work will directly contribute to the efficient operation of our credit control processes and help maintain the integrity of our financial systems.

  • Proactively seek payment for water and debtor arrears through verbal and written communications
  • Ensure all adjustments to water and debtor accounts are appropriately authorised
  • Maintain adequate credit control contact records and ensure that Council's debt recovery meets policy and practice
  • Liaise with Operational Managers to transition arrears into centralised credit collection processes
  • Liaise with collection agencies to manage outstanding accounts in line with policy
  • Assist in the development and operation of various financial systems and new processes
  • Assist with reconciliations
  • Actively ensure that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation
  • Assist the Finance team with other finance-related functions when required
  • Experience with debtors and debt collection, while not essential, would be an advantage
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in the use of systems, especially Microsoft Excel
  • Takes responsibility and accountability for own actions and day-to-day decision-making
  • Effective performance and delivery within a political environment
  • Maintains cultural awareness and keeps up to date with issues affecting the community
