Job description

Joining our company as a Market Development and Purchasing Lead for Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands offers a unique and exciting career move. This role provides a chance to drive significant market expansion, lead the procurement for our Fabrics and Fashion division, and establish our wholesale and retail presence in new territories. You'll work in a high-growth, startup environment that values innovation, strategic thinking, and results‑driven performance, providing substantial career advancement opportunities.

Key Performance Objectives (KPOs)

  • Within the first year, develop and execute a comprehensive market entry strategy for Papua New Guinea and at least two other Pacific Island countries, achieving sales targets within 12 months. This involves identifying key market opportunities, building strategic partnerships, and securing initial sales channels.
  • In the first 24 months, assist the team in planning, developing, and successfully launching a retail store with product presence in New Zealand, including site procurement selection, store design, vendor negotiations, and team recruitment. By the end of 24 months, the retail store should be operational with strong initial sales figures and positive customer reception. Subsequently, within the next 36 months, launch a similar store in overseas selected countries such as Fiji and PNG, with both stores contributing significantly to the company’s overall revenue.
  • Within the first year, lead purchasing for the Fabrics and Fashion division, implementing value‑driven procurement processes and systems to streamline operations, achieve cost savings, and ensure high‑quality diverse product availability. This includes building and maintaining strong relationships with key suppliers and implementing multiple process improvements to enhance efficiency.
  • Drive a 25% increase in revenue from new markets within the first year through effective business development strategies for the Fabrics, Fashion, and FMCG sectors in PNG, leveraging vendor relationships, optimizing procurement, and ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Within the first year, recruit, train, and develop a high‑performing local team to support market expansion and procurement activities. Success will be measured by candidate quality, team KPIs, training outcomes, and market success.

  • Navigating new markets : Understanding and navigating the unique business environments of Papua New Guinea and other Pacific Islands, including regulatory frameworks, cultural nuances, and logistical complexities.
  • Establishing retail presence : Launching a new retail store in competitive markets such as New Zealand and PNG, requiring meticulous planning, strong vendor relationships, and effective marketing strategies.
  • Optimising procurement : Streamlining procurement processes across diverse product categories while ensuring consistent quality and cost‑effectiveness.
  • Transition from established roles to startup : Moving from a well‑established role within a large company to a small, dynamic startup, requiring flexibility and the ability to wear many hats.
  • Building and leading a lean team : Establishing and working with a team that maximizes output using technology, while keeping the team size lean.
  • Using technology to drive efficiency, innovation, and progress within your area.
