The Company

Our client is a large international engineering company who manufactures bespoke, industrial equipment for vital industries across NZ and beyond. They have a large manufacturing site in a central location in Hamilton with top‑of‑the‑line CNC machines and other production machines that produce every component and assemble in‑house. They also have a dedicated service team for customers on site.

They are a true champion of Lean manufacturing and 5S principles. Every work station and process are set up and organised meticulously to optimise production flow and efficiency.

The Role

As part of the senior leadership team, you will lead a team of 3 in the materials department, and ensure materials are purchased according to schedules and sales demand. As a commercial savvy manager, you will plan, manage and oversee procurement strategies and vendor relationships, and ensure the business derives the best value by maximising efficiency, and minimising risks and wastes.

While this is a leadership role, we are seeking a hands‑on manager who is involved in the day‑to‑day running of the department and transaction processes. Although they already have robust processes and systems in place, you will seek to continually improve and evolve them in accordance to new technology development in AI and analyst tools.

Due to discrete nature of the manufacturing process, you will ideally come from an engineering or similar background where you have a technical understanding in different components and materials including stainless steel, aluminium, etc., as well as being comfortable working with shifting requirements for different steps of the process.

Responsibilities

• Administer the day‑to‑day operations of the buying, production planning, capacity planning, scheduling to support customer demand levels.
• In response to sales and marketing forecasts, manage the demand, material, scheduling functions for all manufacturing operations including development of policies and procedures, training, review and maintenance of system data.
• Lead and facilitate vendor selection processes ensuring the determination of requirements, specifications and selection criteria, review of proposals, negotiation and final decisions.
• Implement supplier agreements where appropriate, including offshore suppliers to ensure that trade compliance is addressed.
• Manage inventory targets and price review process.
• Monitor and manage the performance of the materials and purchasing team.
