Overview

Bailiff – Wellington. Permanent, full-time.

Represent the Ministry of Justice as part of the Collections team. The Collections team is part of the National Service Delivery Group and is responsible for the Ministry's debt portfolio. The collections operation is the enforcement arm of the District Court, delivering on the strategy of “Better Debt Resolution”.

Responsibilities

The Bailiff function is a national operation with a team of 39 Bailiffs, working from multiple sites across the country. A Bailiff's primary purpose is to collect money by enforcing outstanding fines, reparation, and civil debt, and to serve court documents. This role can involve on-road work that may require eviction from a property, obtaining full payment, seizing assets, or serving documents. In executing a warrant, you may attach a wheel clamp or seize a vehicle to recover outstanding fines or debt. A good level of physical fitness is required. Much of the work is performed independently, visiting people at their homes or places of work, or in collaboration with stakeholder partners such as police and local authorities. Some individuals may be uncooperative, so the ability to stand firm and achieve the right outcome is key.

Qualifications / Skills and Experience

You do not need prior experience in security or debt collection. Successful Bailiffs come from a wide range of backgrounds. We are looking for the right people with the right characteristics :

  • full Class-1 driver’s licence

    Salary

    The appointing salary for this role will be between $66,066 and $90,008, based on skills and experience.

    Note that successful candidates may be required to attend training in Wellington or Auckland for 2 weeks.
