About the Role

NPHS Te Waipounamu team is seeking a passionate and skilled Health Promotion Advisor to join our Community and Whānau Wellbeing team in the Southern district based in our Dunedin office. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to transformational change in our health system, guided by the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) vision and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

As a Health Promotion Advisor, you will lead and support initiatives that enhance community health and wellbeing. You will contribute to strategies and policies that address the determinants of health and wellbeing that are realigned with community and government priorities, such as smokefree. Your mahi will include :

  • Working collaboratively with community partners to design and deliver health promotion initiatives informed by evaluation
  • Ensure health promotion work is evidence-informed, culturally responsive, and aligned with whānau and community wellbeing outcomes
  • Advocating for Māori health equity and supporting Māori-led and Pacific-led responses
  • Influencing policy and creating supportive environments for wellbeing
  • Applying systems thinking and innovation to improve outcomes
  • About the Team / Service / Location

    The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga / wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

    This role is based within the Community and Whānau Wellbeing team which aims to enhance the health and wellbeing of the whole community through creating supportive environments to make healthy choices more available to whānau. You'll be dedicated to seeing communities thrive and will partner with them to deliver initiatives that realise Pae Ora.

    About you

    You are a motivated team member who is skilled at connecting and working with community partners such as NGOs and councils. You can work in an evidence-based way, integrating health promotion frameworks, health data and community insights to inform priorities and programme development. You have excellent relationship management and influencing skills.

    With a focus on achieving equity, you will work closely with local government, iwi and hapū, and priority communities to bring about positive changes on a range of issues including smokefree / vape free and food environments. You have a willingness to build constructive and effective relationships with stakeholders, understanding their needs and environment.

  • Previous experience in health promotion, community development or a related role
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively alongside communities and wider stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs and projects
  • Experience in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action
  • Clean NZ Driver's License
  • Willing to travel across the region
  • Working for Health New Zealand
