Rotoroa is open to the public and offers diverse native wildlife, beaches, tracks and visitor facilities including a visitor centre, small shop and accommodation for 47 people in an 18‑bed bunk room style house and 3 furnished houses. This is a full‑time role based on a 40 hour a week roster.

Role and responsibilities

  • Accommodation and visitor facility servicing
  • Visitor and event support
  • Guided walks and kiosk support
  • Volunteer programme coordination
  • Island administration
  • Biosecurity

Requirements and qualifications

You will support the Island Manager who has overall responsibility for the island and sets work programmes. The role will be extremely busy in summer months and focuses on revenue generation from visitors. It requires an experienced, fit, energetic, highly motivated and practical person who is prepared to take on any task and complete it within set timeframes and to a consistently high standard. It could be shared by a couple, but you would need to accept not always having time off together as the work is rostered.

Practical, calm under pressure, trustworthy, highly organised and able to work efficiently alone or with others (staff, contractors and volunteers) are essential. You must have strong initiative to anticipate and complete tasks such as mowing, cleaning a house, doing laundry or end‑of‑month reporting. You must be a people person and a great communicator, as you will spend a considerable amount of time with visitors.

You must be competent with Microsoft 365 and have administration experience, as you will be responsible for data entry, record keeping, ordering equipment and supplies, and other administrative support for the Island Manager. Administration is a vital part of this role. A current driver’s licence is required; a first aid certificate is preferred. You must be a NZ citizen or have a current long‑term work visa. We are unable to act as visa sponsors. This job is not suited to people with no prior experience.

What we offer

A stunning natural environment to work in, a largely furnished house, Wi‑Fi, power, uniform and travel to and from Auckland by ferry.

Preference

Preference will be given to applicants who are able to start by mid November 2025.
