Do you have a passion for protecting both people and pets?

Join us and make a difference every day!

About our District - Our mission is to make our communities better and this role will play a key part in achieving this. We are located in a tranquil area of New Zealand offering some of the best access to the great outdoors. We also boast attractive housing prices for your town, village or rural lifestyle and we are within commuting distance to larger centres.

About our Organisation - We are a progressive, values-based organisation, which is dedicated to providing quality services and facilities for our communities. We place strong emphasis on our organisational culture, which in turn creates strong engagement across our team. We employ people with a 'Can Do' attitude who want to work for a united organisation with a strong sense of family that is proud to serve its communities.

At STDC, we are an energetic, progressive organisation and offer a proven "best place to work" environment. Our team culture encourages innovation, we care about your professional development, and you will be working with an elite and motivated team of professionals.

About the Role - The primary purpose of this role is to ensure public safety, safe streets and public spaces through the appropriate enforcement of the dog and animal control bylaws. The Compliance Officer also promotes better care and control of dogs, provides public education and also manages unwanted animals and the rehoming of dogs. Keeping the pound facilities maintained is also a requirement of this role.

Do you have what it takes? - This is a busy role with plenty of variety from patrolling areas within the district where dog control problems may occur, to dealing with animals and owners. You will enforce the requirements of the Dog Control Act, Dog Policy and Bylaws, Stock Control Bylaw, Impounding Act and any other relevant Acts or Bylaws. In addition, this role will attend Council hearings and the district court when required by the Regulatory Services Manager, and deal with any other environmental nuisances as directed.

The Council provides a 24-hour animal management service; therefore, a requirement of this role is working on a 24-hour after-hours roster.

About You - You will have knowledge of the Dog Control Act 1996, Impounding Act 1955, Dog Control Bylaw and Policy, Stock Control Bylaw and other general bylaws. Experience and confidence when handling dogs and stock is essential for this role. You will have a "can-do" attitude, self-motivation, the ability to work under pressure, excellent customer service and people skills, excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills. In addition, you will be a supportive team player and hold a current (clean) drivers' licence. An occupation-related certificate such as a NZ Certificate in Regulatory Compliance (Operational Practice) (Level 4) would be advantageous.

This is a permanent full time, 40 hours per week role. The salary range for this position is between $67,050pa and $74,500pa and the appointed starting level will be dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed during interviews with shortlisted candidates.

If this role appeals to you, head over to our website where you can access the background information and job description for the role. If submitting an application, please ensure you provide a covering letter outlining your skills and experience for the role along with your most current CV.

Applications close at 4pm on Sunday, 30 November 2025 or when a suitable candidate has been appointed.
