Hillmorton High School is a diverse urban coeducational school situated in the Southwest of Christchurch. The school is a fast-growing Y7–13 school with dedicated middle and senior schools. We have a roll of around 1,400 and with further building works underway, the roll is expected to increase in the next few years. We provide students with a caring and supportive environment, to help them achieve academic excellence, leadership skills and a love of learning.

We require a speech and language therapist to join our Upland Unit to support a diverse and complex group of students with multiple disabilities. There will be 38 students on the roll in 2026.

This is a fixed-term position, the successful candidate will be the sole speech and language therapist within the Upland Unit, however supervision and support will be given from the current speech and language therapist who will be on maternity leave. New graduates will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment, planning and implementation of programmes for students with diverse and complex communication needs
  • Working with pre-intentional communication, high and low-tech alternative and augmentative communication systems
  • Development of language and literacy, and spoken language
  • Assessment and management of dysphagia.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Speech Language Therapy
  • Membership in the Special Interest Group for Special Schools and Units in Christchurch (arranged upon appointment)
  • Applicants will be required to undergo police vetting and cannot be appointed until a successful result has been received
  • The successful applicant must be a NZ registered speech and language therapist
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in New Zealand with no restrictions.
  • Current EMS accreditation for communication expected to be in place once employed.
  • A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the understanding and ability to teach using culturally responsive and relational pedagogy is essential.
  • Remuneration as per the Primary Teachers’ Collective Agreement.
