The Opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced and proactive Building Services Supervisor to lead our building maintenance team at the NZDF Devonport Naval Base.

This is a key leadership role, responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and high‑quality delivery of building maintenance services across a complex Defence site. Your team includes tradespeople, trades assistants, and apprentices , so strong mentoring capability will be an important part of your success.

You’ll supervise day‑to‑day work, support technical development, and help shape a team culture built on pride, quality, and continuous improvement. What You’ll Do

• Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the building maintenance team, including tradespeople, trades assistants, and apprentices.
• Provide mentoring, coaching, and hands‑on guidance to support the development of less experienced team members.
• Plan and oversee scheduled and reactive maintenance to meet timeframes and quality standards.
• Manage subcontractors, materials, and procurement in line with company procedures.
• Ensure all work meets health, safety, environmental, and compliance requirements.
• Support operational reporting and assist in developing maintenance schedules and forward work plans.
• Build strong working relationships with NZDF personnel, subcontractors, and the wider PAE team.
• Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive work ethic across the team.

What You’ll Bring

• A trade qualification and at least 5 years’ experience in building maintenance or facilities operations.
• Previous leadership or supervisory experience, ideally overseeing a mixed team including apprentices or early‑career tradespeople.
• Strong communication and organisational skills able to motivate, mentor, and lift capability across the team.
• A practical, solutions‑focused mindset and commitment to high‑quality workmanship.
• Possess the ability to use work management software and other IT systems.
• Sound knowledge of building compliance, safety requirements, and maintenance standards.
• A full NZ Class 1 driver’s licence.
• The ability to obtain necessary client clearances, including NZDF Site Clearance and Ministry of Justice checks.

Special Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must have the ability to obtain NZDF Site Clearance and successfully complete a pre‑employment medical and drug test. These requirements ensure we maintain the high standards of safety, security, and wellbeing expected when working within Defence environments.
