Editorial Lead / Managing Editor - Financial & Business Media

Feel Think Act Limited – Wellington Central, North Island

Tarawera Publishing Ltd

Full-time | Flexible Location (NZ-based)

Lead editorial. Shape the future of NZ’s financial media.

Equity / ownership pathway available.

Tarawera Publishing Ltd (TPL) is the country’s leading specialist publisher in personal finance and financial services. Our well-known brands - Good Returns, ASSET Magazine, TMM (The Mortgage Mag), tmmonline.nz and landlords.co.nz - have been informing, supporting and influencing New Zealand’s financial sector for more than 25 years.

We’re looking for an experienced Editorial Lead / Managing Editor to take charge of our editorial direction, elevate our content, and help drive the future of our media brands. For the right person, this role includes a genuine pathway to equity or partial ownership as part of long‑term succession planning.

This is a rare opportunity to lead the editorial heartbeat of highly respected, independent publications with a loyal and engaged professional audience, at an exciting time as we prepare to launch a new website with a new revenue model.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the editorial strategy across all TPL titles
  • Research, write and edit high-quality news, features and analysis
  • Oversee the production cycle for magazines, websites and newsletters
  • Manage editorial planning, content calendars and contributor briefs
  • Attend industry events, build relationships and stay close to the market
  • Guide the growth of our multimedia channels (Good Returns TV, podcasts)
  • Help implement the final stages of a major website redevelopment
  • Ensure accuracy, quality and independence remain at the core of our content

This role suits a seasoned journalist or editor who can confidently own editorial outcomes from concept to publication.

Why This Role Is Unique

  • Equity / Ownership Pathway : For the right person, there is a real opportunity to take on equity or eventually own significant parts of the business.
  • Editorial Independence : You’ll lead with freedom, backed by a respected brand that values integrity and straight‑up journalism.
  • Flexible Location : Work from anywhere in New Zealand, with occasional travel to events.
  • Influence & Impact : We’re niche, respected and widely read; your work will shape conversation and direction across the financial services sector.
  • What We’re Looking For

  • Strong experience in journalism, ideally business or financial
  • Excellent writing, editing and storytelling skills
  • Ability to run an editorial function end‑to‑end
  • Confidence dealing with industry leaders, advisers and stakeholders
  • Digital publishing and newsletter experience (CMS, SEO, etc.)
  • Experience in multimedia (video / audio) is a bonus
  • Highly organised, self‑driven and comfortable with autonomy
  • If you’ve been working in media, corporate communications, business journalism or editorial leadership, and you’re ready for the next meaningful step, this could be it!
