About Aotearoa Infinite Academy

Aotearoa Infinite Academy is New Zealand's first tuition‑free online high school, pioneering accessible, world‑class education for students in Years 9-13 across all of Aotearoa. We combine international (Pearson Edexcel pre‑IGCSE and IGCSE) and national (NCEA Levels 2 and 3) curricula with a flexible, virtual learning model that prioritises wellbeing, belonging, and personalised support.

About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and experienced SENCO Teacher to join our founding team and play a crucial role in ensuring every student at Aotearoa Infinite Academy has the support they need to thrive. This is a unique opportunity to shape inclusive learning practices in New Zealand's first online charter school, working with students from diverse backgrounds and locations across the country.

As our SENCO Teacher, you will lead the development and implementation of our learning support framework, ensuring students with additional learning needs receive personalised, effective support within our virtual classroom environment.

There will be a teaching component to this role; please state your subject specialism.

Key Responsibilities

Learning Support & Coordination

  • Identify, assess, and coordinate support for students with special educational needs
  • Coordinate and liaise with external specialists, therapists, and support services (RTLB, MOE services, etc.)

Teaching & Curriculum Adaptation

  • Deliver targeted learning support through small group and one‑on‑one virtual sessions
  • Adapt curriculum materials and learning activities to meet diverse learning needs within our Pre‑IGCSE, IGCSE, and NCEA framework
  • Staff Development & Collaboration

  • Lead professional development for staff on inclusive practices, learning differences, and adaptive teaching strategies
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to embed universal design for learning principles across all subjects
  • Family & Community Engagement

  • Build strong, trust‑based relationships with families and whānau to support student learning journeys
  • Communicate regularly with parents / caregivers about student progress, strategies, and celebrations
  • Facilitate family meetings and IEP reviews in a culturally responsive manner
  • Connect families with community resources and support services as needed
  • Essential Criteria

  • Full New Zealand Teaching Registration
  • Postgraduate qualification in Special Education, Inclusive Education, or relevant field (or working towards)
  • Minimum 3‑5 years teaching experience, with demonstrated experience supporting students with diverse learning needs
  • Strong understanding of the SENCO role and MOE learning support frameworks
  • Experience developing and implementing IEPs and learning support plans
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills with students, families, and professionals
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in online or distance learning environments
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies and digital accessibility tools
  • Knowledge of both international (IGCSE) and national (NCEA) curriculum frameworks
  • Understanding of culturally responsive practices and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in educational contexts
  • Qualifications or experience in behaviour support, literacy intervention, or specialist areas
