Marist Alternative Education Limited – Auckland, North Island
Secondary (Years 7–15) / wharekura, Certificated teacher
Giving Hope to Second Chance Students
Marist Alternative Education limited is a ministry of the Marist Brothers of New Zealand, giving young people on the Auckland’s North Shore. Since 1999, students have come to the Marist Learning Centre wanting to give education and schooling a second try.
Programmes are developed in response to the special needs of each student and aim at developing behaviour patterns that enable them to return to mainstream classes or training for employment or into employment.
The Learning Centre is looking for a passionate and adaptable part‑time experienced teacher or educator who will work with a small number of students aged 13‑16 providing learning which is inquiry or project based. This is very much a hands‑on, practical delivery of a curriculum that builds on literacy and numeracy, including life skills based on real world themes and the interests of the students.
Many of our tauira (students) are Māori and Pasifika, which requires a significant cultural understanding including cultural practices and values, with the ability to build meaningful relationships with each student based on a strong desire to enable each student to succeed.
This role would suit a teacher of middle school or who is experienced in primary or secondary school who has found creative ways of teaching and engaging those students who have had poor learning experiences.
