Job description

We are looking for someone who can maintain a professional, efficient, and sustainable Clinical Engineering service to the Mid Central and Whanganui Hospitals.

Clinical Engineering Team Leader, Mid-Central and Whanganui Permanent Full-time

Are you a hands-on technical leader ready to make an impact in healthcare?

We are seeking a dynamic Team Leader – Health Technology Operations to join our Clinical Engineering team.

In this key leadership role, you will guide multi-disciplinary teams in delivering safe, efficient, and reliable medical equipment and systems that directly support frontline healthcare services.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role

As Team Leader, you'll be responsible for the day-to-day operational delivery of Health Technology Management (HTM) services across the equipment lifecycle—from procurement and installation to maintenance and decommissioning.

You will not only manage and lead others but also remain on the tools, applying your clinical engineering knowledge in a hands-on capacity.

You'll work across departments to ensure that medical devices and systems are safe, functional, compliant, and readily available—supporting clinicians to deliver high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary clinical engineering team delivering HTM services.
  • Provide expert guidance on the full lifecycle of health technology : acquisition, calibration, performance checks, repairs, decontamination, decommissioning, and disposal.
  • Coordinate the onboarding, configuration, commissioning, and maintenance of medical equipment and systems.
  • Oversee compliance with NZ regulations, safety standards, and cybersecurity for devices.
  • Lead safety alert and recall management, incident investigation, and risk mitigation.
  • Drive innovation, continuous improvement, and cost-efficiency across operations.
  • Build team capacity and support workforce development and retention strategies.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external vendors, and national HTM partners.
  • Ensure high-quality service delivery, KPI tracking, and effective contract management.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership, including budgeting and planning.

This is a permanent, full-time role working 80 hours per fortnight (1.0 FTE) , Monday to Friday.

You will be based in either Palmerston North or Whanganui.

You will report into the Clinical Engineering Manager based in Hawke's Bay.
