East Kent Hospitals requires a principal clinical scientist in Haemostasis and Thrombosis to join our dynamic team of experienced biomedical scientists and clinicians, supporting operational delivery, staff training, method development, and review of clinical guidelines. This full‑time post is based at Kent and Canterbury Hospital. Ideal candidates should possess Part 1 FRCPath, an MSc and / or PhD in Clinical Haematology / Haemostasis, and be registered as a clinical scientist with the HCPC. The role provides excellent training opportunities, including preparation for Part 2 FRCPath, and offers a rewarding, varied position delivering a wide scope of diagnostic services using innovative technology.

The laboratory is a designated specialist laboratory within the South East Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre, one of only 28 such labs in the UK. It processed over 30,000 samples last year, many related to life‑threatening and life‑changing bleeding and thrombotic disorders. The lab provides nationally required assays for non‑accidental injury screening. A single LIMS solution will go live across the network in the next 12–18 months, and procurement for a Kent and Medway managed service contract is concluding in 2025.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for a range of complex specialist scientific work, demanding skilled performance with or without scientific and / or technical support. They will contribute to quality management and the training of both clinical scientists and biomedical scientists. Regular Kent and Medway journal club and clinical meetings are attended by all clinical scientists.

Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN) is a formal partnership of seven laboratories across three pathology services in four acute Trusts. Our 1,000 colleagues provide services across the health and care sector to a population of nearly 2 million. KMPN is developing a network academy, a platform for all network education and training from apprenticeships to advanced clinical and scientific qualifications, and is pursuing joint ventures to transform services.

  • Good honours degree in a subject relevant to clinical Haematology / Haemostasis (1st or 2nd class).

  • Successful completion of STP or equivalent clinical scientist training programme.

  • Registration with the HCPC.

  • Part 1 FRCPath.

  • Part 2 FRCPath (or working towards).
  • " "

  • PhD.

  • Teaching certificate.

  • Evidence of management training / qualification.
