Role and Responsibilities

  • 1 year fixed-term role pivotal in shaping the future of the Rotorua Museum by driving the development of long-term exhibitions and curating a dynamic programme of short-term and changing exhibitions.
  • Work closely with iwi and hapū, artists, partners, and guest curators to bring to life authentic stories that celebrate the distinctive identity and bicultural heritage of Rotorua and Te Arawa.
  • Craft and implement the Museum’s exhibition strategy; provide curatorial expertise and creative leadership as preparation for reopening.
  • Engage in research and content development, storytelling and design to deliver exhibitions that inspire and engage diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate with artists, local groups, and guest curators to co-develop exhibitions reflecting community vibrancy and elevating the Museum’s national profile.
  • Oversee production of new works, manage budgets, timelines, and logistics, and foster partnerships with other museums and cultural institutions to extend outreach and impact.

Qualifications

  • Creative, experienced museum professional with a strong track record in exhibition development and curation.
  • Deep understanding of bicultural practice and cultural storytelling; commitment to te reo Māori me ōna tikanga relevant to the role.
  • Tertiary qualification in Fine Art, Art History, Māori Studies, Social History, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in curating or programming museum exhibitions.
  • Strong project management, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience working with museum collections; postgraduate study or work with Te Arawa or other iwi and hapū would be an advantage.
