Job description

Te Ora Hou Ōtautahi is a kaupapa Māori, faith-based youth and community development organisation committed to strengthening whānau and hapori across Ōtautahi. Our rōpū is diverse, passionate, and whānau-friendly, made up of kaimahi who are dedicated to walking alongside whānau in ways that uphold mana, whakapapa, and self-determination, and to outwork Te Mauri and TOHATOHA collectively and individually. We are seeking three Kaitūwhana to join our team. These roles work directly with whānau to identify their aspirations, navigate challenges, and access the support and opportunities that help them thrive. You will build strong relationships, support whānau-led planning, and work closely with community partners to strengthen wellbeing across multiple areas of life.

The Kaitūwhana works in partnership with whānau who meet service criteria. You will support whānau to identify their strengths, needs, and goals, and help them access the services, resources, and relationships that support their wellbeing. You will walk alongside whānau through complex situations, advocate with agencies when needed, and help create clear plans for their current and future aspirations. This mahi is grounded in kaupapa Māori practice. It requires the ability to build trusting relationships, honour tikanga, uplift mana, and support whānau to move at a pace that works for them. You will also play a key role in risk assessment, crisis response, ongoing planning, and celebrating whānau progress. Ongoing supervision, professional development, and training will be provided.

What you will be doing

  • Responding to referrals and enrolling whānau
  • Building mana-enhancing relationships grounded in tikanga
  • Meeting kanohi ki te kanohi with whānau to explore strengths, needs, and aspirations
  • Supporting whānau to develop and action their own plans
  • Identifying risks early and creating risk or safety plans when required
  • Advocating with or alongside whānau
  • Connecting whānau to community services, agencies, and opportunities
  • Monitoring progress and updating plans
  • Recording case notes accurately and completing reporting requirements
  • Supporting whānau to celebrate milestones and manage their exit from the service
  • Participating in supervision, wānanga, and professional development
  • Deliver and participate in at least one after-hours programme each week

What you will bring

  • Experience working with Māori and in kaupapa Māori environments
  • Ability to build strong trust-based relationships with whānau
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and strengths-based practice
  • Experience in areas such as family harm, mental health, addictions, crisis response, or housing is an advantage
  • Confidence working through complex situations with calmness and clarity
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organisational skills
  • Respect for professional boundaries and confidentiality
  • Comfort with digital systems including CMS or CRM
  • A willingness to learn, reflect, and grow through supervision and training
  • Qualifications and requirements

  • Relevant tertiary training is helpful but not essential
  • Full New Zealand driver licence
  • NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa
  • If you have a heart for whānau and want to be part of a kaupapa-driven rōpū committed to genuine community transformation, we would love to hear from you.
