Tēnei tūranga - About the Role :

The General Manager, Entity Performance leads the Entity Performance branch. The branch is responsible for effectively monitoring entities that support economic, regulatory, and science systems, to ensure they meet the Government’s objective to lift economic performance. The branch is also responsible for leading board appointment processes to support the high performance of entities and statutory boards through quality and fit-for-purpose governance.

With a greater focus across the public service on increasing the quality of Crown entity monitoring functions, this role will lead the branch in the next phase of lifting performance and increasing capability. You will continue to build a high-performing monitoring function that acts strategically, and forms strong relationships with the entities monitored, all underpinned by robust performance information, analysis and advice.

This role will require strong leadership and a growth mindset. You will be part of the Labour, Science and Enterprise leadership team and as part of that you will bring your experience in leading complex work programmes and cohesive thinking to deliver results. The successful candidate will bring a comprehensive understanding of the machinery of government and the critical part that Entity Performance plays in MBIE’s purpose of ‘Grow New Zealand for all’.

  • A proven track record of senior leadership in the public sector or similarly complex environments
  • A strategic, people-focused approach with collaborative and authentic leadership
  • Expertise in monitoring, lifting and managing branch performance
  • A breadth of skills and knowledge in manoeuvring through often politically sensitive and ambiguous issues
  • An astute leader with political acumen and the ability to influence high-level decisions
  • Deep understanding of the machinery of government and public sector operations
  • A track record of driving continuous improvement, innovation and a learning culture
  • The ability to inspire, motivate, and align teams around a shared vision
  • Strong relationship-building skills across government and external stakeholders
  • A solid understanding of the key influences on the New Zealand economy, business environment and relevant markets
  • Tertiary qualification or extensive and comparable experience in a strategic management position
  • To be considered for this role you must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand
  • Must consent to and satisfactorily complete a credit check as the position holds financial delegations
