Job description

Demographic Advisory Panel Member : Youth Advisory Panel

  • Mahi that shapes the future of Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland!
  • Advice that supports decisions affecting all Aucklanders, building more inclusive policies

Share your lived experiences and offer insights that reflect the diversity of our city.

Heangitūtanga : The opportunity

Your voice matters in shaping Auckland’s future. The Youth Advisory Panel brings together young people aged 14–24 to advise Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland Council on issues that affect their lives, from climate action and mental wellbeing to transport and belonging. Members help ensure youth perspectives are heard in the city’s biggest decisions.

If you’re ready to influence positive change this is your chance to step up and be heard.

Auckland Council is seeking Aucklanders from a range of diverse backgrounds who are interested in serving as a member of the Demographic Advisory Panels, a space where your insights, experiences, and ideas can help shape the future of Tāmaki Makaurau.

As a panel member you’ll provide advice to decision-makers on :

  • Regional strategies, plans and key policies
  • Strategic matters affecting Auckland
  • Issues of particular interest or concern to diverse communities
  • Your contribution will help ensure Auckland’s policies and plans reflect the diversity of our city and support all communities to thrive.

    Advisory Panels

    Advisory Panels are one way Auckland Council engages meaningfully with diverse communities. We know that involving Aucklanders with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives is vital to the region’s success.

    These panels offer a space where your insights, experiences, and ideas can help shape the future of Tāmaki Makaurau.

    The demographic panels meet approximately every six‑eight weeks, with each meeting lasting three hours. You’ll also be invited to attend additional cross‑panel workshops and activities. On average, panel members spend around 10–15 hours per month on panel‑related work, including preparation for meetings, pre‑reading of draft policies and plans, and giving feedback.

    You’re passionate about contributing to the future of Tāmaki Makaurau and supporting positive outcomes for our communities.

    In this role, you’ll bring lived experience of your communities with an understanding of diverse perspective. You will be collaborating with others and sharing your experiences and perspectives to help advise Council.

    Ideally, you will :

  • Be actively involved in your community or sector, with a strong understanding of its issues, aspirations, and challenges;
  • Bring thoughtful and strategic insights to panel conversations;
  • Work well with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Engage and give advice confidently to a range of stakeholders and contribute to group discussions;
  • Understand Te Tiritio Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi – we especially welcome applicants with lived experience of Te ao Māori;
  • Have experience interpreting policy, project plans, or strategies, preferred but not essential.
  • You’ll need to commit to a three‑year term and be available for scheduled panel meetings and workshops (held on weekdays and / or evenings).

    If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you – no perfect match needed.

    Panel members are paid meeting fees and reimbursed for travel expenses as per the Auckland Council Fees Framework and Expenses Policy for Appointed Members.

    We are proud to be recognised for our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We are accredited by GenderTick, a signatory of the Pride Pledge. These commitments reflect our ongoing efforts to create a workplace where everyone will feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. Together, we can create a Tāmaki Makaurau we can all be proud of.

    Application close date : 7th December 2025

    Should you require assistance, please contact :

    If you have any support or access requirements, we encourage you to advise us at the time of application to assist you through the recruitment process. We are here to support you every step of the way!

    Please note : The questions in the online application form are standard recruitment questions for Auckland Council and may not all be relevant to the advisory panel role. In particular, the questions on salary expectations and notice period can be answered with 'not applicable'.

    We will be continuing the recruitment process mid to late Jan 2026.

    All successful applicants will be required to complete pre‑appointment checks, including a Ministry of Justice or qualification check where applicable.

    Auckland Council is an equal opportunity employer. We serve the diverse communities of Tāmaki Makaurau and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds - regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, educational background, or religious beliefs.
