ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re seeking a multi-skilled operational Lead to join our Lyttelton operation. Reporting to the Operations Manager, you’ll lead and support a team of stevedores engaged in loading and unloading vessels.

This is a hands‑on leadership role. While you’ll oversee day‑to‑day operations and safety on the wharf and on board vessels, you’ll also be expected to step in and operate ship’s cranes, heavy plant, and other machinery as operational needs require.

Our operations run 24 / 7 with 8‑ and 12‑hour shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays. You may also be asked to travel to other ports to support operations when required.

This position is covered by a collective employment agreement , which provides agreed terms and conditions, including remuneration and allowances.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

• Lead pre‑start / toolbox meetings to brief teams on safety and operational requirements
• Oversee safe and efficient loading / unloading of vessels, ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental standards
• Communicate traffic management plans, operating procedures, and safety expectations to employees, contractors and other PCBUs
• Operate and / or supervise the operation of ship’s cranes, forklifts and other cargo‑handling equipment as required
• Ensure equipment is used and maintained to OEM standards, arranging repairs where necessary
• Manage cargo flow using cargo management systems
• Provide timely and accurate reporting to customers, management and key stakeholders (basic computer skills in Excel, Word and Outlook are essential)
