THE POSITION

This New Plymouth based role is a full-time role – five days per week, Monday to Friday, with regular travel around North and South Taranaki.

We are looking for someone who is committed to making a meaningful difference for the whānau / families they support, someone who is outstanding at connecting and talking to people (whānau / family, key agencies and community networks). If this role fits with your qualifications, experience, and aspirations, please apply asap. We will interview as applicants apply and appoint as soon as possible.

ABOUT YBR

Yellow Brick Road is a well‑respected national organisation with a 40‑year+ history. We provide specialist support, advocacy and education for whānau / families who have a loved one experiencing mental health challenges. Helping whānau / families to build their strength and resilience, and gather strategies and tools, to manage life on a day‑to‑day basis.

Our work / mahi is whānau centred. We do not work with the loved one who is experiencing the mental health challenges. We walk alongside whānau using a Te Whare Tapa Wha approach and provide support that is based on what whānau need and at a pace that suits them. Our mahi is solutions focused, and trauma informed.

Whānau are the unsung heroes who every day, through thick and thin, make the decision to support their loved one. This can be a difficult journey. We know that supporting whānau / families through their challenges can help to improve daily life and the overall wellness across the whole whānau.

THE ROLE

If you are a person who has a solid understanding of what can be involved when working with whānau / families managing mental health challenges, then this role may be for you. You will be astonishingly good at relationships, be highly organised and very professional. You will be strong and resilient, with space in yourself to hold and manage the challenges of others. Your mahi will have a strong focus on actively guiding whānau / family through their goal centred journey with Yellow Brick Road. You will also be comfortable to sometimes meet with whānau / families in community‑based settings and will be motivated to travel and be out and about.

This is an energetic role that requires you to successfully relate to and work closely with your team, with diverse families / whānau, and with (clinical and non‑clinical) health professionals and agencies who engage in the wellbeing of our families / whānau. It is a highly rewarding role where you can make a significant impact on the lives of the people you work with.

THE APPLICANT

Essential Requirements

  • Level 4 Health and Wellbeing Certificate with a Mental Health focus, but preferably a higher tertiary qualification (social services, social work, counselling, psychology etc.). Professional registration is not required.
  • Knowledge of mental health conditions, the mental health system and what people and families experience with mental health and addictions challenges.
  • Understanding of Māori models of hauora and well‑being and preferably experience with integrating te ao Māori and tikanga Māori into your mahi.
  • Experience and understanding in supporting people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Experience (or a willingness to acquire experience) with working in a goal focused framework and to achieve monthly targets.
  • Proven competency in report writing and research skills.
  • Strong computer literacy with preferred experience in using (MS365) word, excel, outlook, TEAMs, OneDrive, a client management system and intranet use.
  • The ability and confidence to work autonomously, while also being an engaged and positive team member.
  • A natural kindness approach that encourages open and authentic relationships, with effective listening and communication skills.
  • Clean and full NZ driver’s license.
  • The right to work without sponsorship or Visa restrictions in Aotearoa New Zealand. Please do not apply if you do not meet this requirement.
  • Preferred Requirements

  • Empathy and understanding of the challenges whānau experience when a loved one is unwell.
  • Lived experience in supporting a loved one through mental health challenges.
  • Existing knowledge of New Plymouth / Taranaki based mental health and addictions networks and social services.
  • Knowledge of mental health and addictions resources.
  • Group facilitation skills and experience.
  • Internal and external supervision, peer support and training will be provided.

Yellow Brick Road is a kindness focused organisation that looks after its people. Join us to work holistically with whānau to build happy, healthy, and self‑sustaining communities.
