About this role

Permanent role based in Invercargill, New Zealand. As an Early Intervention Teacher, you will play a critical role in our region’s Learning Support team by :

  • Providing high‑quality learning support in line with the Ministry’s practice framework, He Pikorua guiding principles, strands, and goals of Te Whāriki : Early Childhood Curriculum, and Te Whāriki a te Kōhanga Reo.
  • Building and strengthening the capability of those best placed to support children’s learning such as parents, teachers, and whānau | families.
  • Understanding families’ needs, collaboratively planning, supporting, and monitoring the implementation of intervention plans.
  • Supporting transition points in the child’s learning pathway, such as transition into early childhood education and to school when required.
  • Working as part of a trans‑disciplinary team where a child’s needs are complex.

Salary range : $69,966 – $106,016 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you

To be successful you will need :

  • A Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) and a full registration as a teacher.
  • A post‑graduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching : Early Intervention, or the ability to attain this within four years of beginning in the position.
  • A few years of teaching experience and a deep knowledge of child development, learning and behaviour.
  • An understanding of a range of needs and disabilities and their implications for daily functioning in family life and for teaching and learning in early childhood and family homes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with ākonga | learners, whānau | families and kaiako | teachers across diverse settings.
  • The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga.
  • A full driver’s licence.
  • Residency status as a New Zealand citizen, resident or holder of a valid working visa.
  • Availability to commence employment in January 2026 (flexibility around start dates is offered).
  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

    Learning Support is a critical part of the Te Mahau | Te Tai Whenua Group in the Ministry. We ensure that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education. Our specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
